Frequently Asked Question's
Hiring a mold detection dog offers a precise and efficient way to identify mold in your home or business. Our trained mold dogs can detect mold hidden behind walls, under floors, and in other hard-to-reach areas, finding mold that would normally go unnoticed. This non-invasive method is faster and less disruptive than traditional mold detection techniques, saving you money, time and the hassle. By using a mold dog, you get a thorough inspection that helps protect your property and health, providing peace of mind and a healthier environment.
While our service may have a higher upfront cost, it can save you thousands in the long run. Traditional mold testing usually costs a few hundred dollars per test and can miss hidden problem areas, often leading to repeated and costly remediation.
By using a mold dog to pinpoint hidden mold throughout your home, you reduce the risk of these repeated cycles. Targeting only the affected areas also helps lower the overall cost of remediation.
Yes! Dogs' noses are so powerful that they can detect what cannot be seen by the naked eye. Their olfactory system is highly advanced, making their sense of smell incredibly powerful. With around 300 million olfactory receptors—compared to 6 million in humans—dogs can detect and differentiate a vast range of odors at concentrations up to 100 million times lower than humans. Their remarkable olfactory abilities make them invaluable in roles like search and rescue, detection of drugs/explosives, medical diagnosis, and MOLD.
Additionally, our dogs training has primarily prepared them through repeated practice in finding mold that cannot be seen by humans or other dogs.
When comparing mold inspection services, it's important to look beyond price alone. Mold detection dogs require extensive training, ongoing maintenance training, annual certification, and skilled handlers to ensure reliable results. At The Mold Mutts, our K9 teams are independently certified through the American Working Dog Association (AWDA), meaning both the dog and handler are tested together by an unbiased third party—not by their trainer or breeder.
Our dogs are trained to detect mold hidden behind walls, beneath flooring, inside HVAC systems, and in other areas that can be difficult to identify through visual inspection alone. This allows us to provide a fast, non-invasive inspection without unnecessary damage to your property.
Our pricing reflects the specialized training, certification standards, experience, and care required to maintain high-performing mold detection K9 teams.
By combining independently certified detection dogs, experienced handlers, and an unbiased approach, we provide a level of accuracy, transparency, and peace of mind that sets us apart from many other mold dog detection companies and traditional inspections.
We believe mold detection and mold remediation should remain separate. Because The Mold Mutts focuses exclusively on mold detection, we have no financial interest in selling remediation services or recommending unnecessary work.
Our goal is to provide accurate, unbiased information so you can make informed decisions about your property. If our dogs alert to the presence of mold, we will explain our findings and discuss potential next steps, but the choice of whether to pursue additional testing or remediation is entirely yours.
The importance of maintaining independence is recognized throughout the industry. In many states, regulations prohibit the same company from performing both mold assessment and mold remediation due to the inherent conflict of interest. While laws vary by location, the principle remains the same: the company identifying a problem should not have a financial incentive to profit from fixing it.
Many clients appreciate knowing that our recommendations are based solely on what we find—not on the potential to sell remediation services. By remaining independent, we are able to provide objective results, transparency, and peace of mind throughout the inspection process.
Our K9 teams are trained to proven industry standards, with a strong focus on accuracy, consistency, and reliable results. Before searching client homes solo, every dog and handler is certified by an independent third party, the American Working Dog Association (AWDA), ensuring our work is evaluated without bias. We’re proud to be the first mold detection K9 team in Utah to earn this industry-recognized certification.
Third-party testing removes conflicts of interest and gives our clients verified confidence in our results. Since certification, our mold dogs continue regular training to maintain peak performance and stay at the top of the industry.
Dogs are unique because they are not driven by money or greed like humans. Dogs have few things that entice them to work. Our dogs are rewarded by their favorite toy's. Not only are they trained to work for their toys, but their handlers are trained with the ability to read and recognize their body language and cues to aid in even more accurate results.
Mold dogs are far more accurate than traditional mold testing methods, and our teams are no exception. Each of our K9s must pass a rigorous third-party certification through the American Working Dog Association (AWDA), achieving a score of 90% or higher.
During testing, the dog and handler team must detect every mold odor while navigating real-world distracting scents. Certification is valid for one year, after which the team must retest to ensure they continue meeting the highest standards. These strict requirements, evaluated by an unbiased third party, guarantee our clients receive the most reliable and accurate mold detection available.

Yes — mold detection dogs are one of the fastest methods of identifying hidden mold in a building.
Mold dogs are a very fast form of mold detection because they can scan large areas in a short amount of time and immediately alert to the presence of mold odor. A trained detection dog can move through an entire home in a couple hours, pinpointing areas where mold is likely present—even behind walls, under flooring, or inside HVAC systems where it can’t be seen.
Mold Dogs can get you results in a matter of hours vs. typical mold testing results take days to weeks.
